Cross-Cutting Issues

CROSS-CUTTING
Issues

Some research questions connect and involve multiple forensic domains. Projects that address such questions can have high impact.

For example, machine learning algorithms are being developed to assist with the evaluation of different types of forensic evidence. Therefore, advances in the methodological aspects of machine learning algorithms can impact multiple domains. Similarly, issues associated with the presentation of novel probabilistic and statistical approaches to jurors, or understanding how lay people interpret probabilistic conclusions, are relevant in several forensic disciplines.

CSAFE facilitates a number of projects of this type organized into two categories: those involving foundational issues in statistics and those associated with the implementation and practice of forensic analyses.
