The Center for Statistics and Applications in Forensic Evidence (CSAFE) is set to host a workshop on its innovative software tools at the 2025 American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD) Symposium.
Alicia Carriquiry, CSAFE director, and Jeff Salyards, CSAFE research scientist, will jointly lead a session titled “CSAFE Tools for Forensic Practice” on Saturday, April 5 from 1-5 p.m. MST. This workshop will feature demonstrations of four applications developed by CSAFE researchers in partnership with scientists from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The applications include:
- BulletAnalyzr: An Application for the Comparision of Bullets
- ShoeComp and ShoeprintAnalyzr: Applications to Align and Compare Footwear Impressions
- Handwriter: An Application for the Evaluation of Handwritten Evidence
These applications are designed to answer forensic questions of interest across several pattern comparison disciplines and assist practitioners in providing a probabilistic assessment of the evidence. They can complement traditional examination methods and either confirm categorical conclusions or call attention to potential issues with those conclusions.
During the workshop, Carriquiry and Salyards will discuss the functionalities and limitations of each application, necessary hardware requirements, accurate interpretation of findings, training opportunities and future development plans. Attendees will be able to download the applications and example datasets before the workshop date.
The ASCLD Symposium will be held April 4-8 in Denver, Colorado. To learn more about the ASCLD Symposium and to register, visit www.ascldsymposium.com.
