CSAFE Learning will host a webinar titled “Turning Knowledge into Action: Mitigating Bias in Forensic Investigations” on July 11 at 11 a.m. CDT. The webinar will address the effects of cognitive bias on forensic decision-making and present practical, research-based solutions.
The webinar will highlight a successful pilot program developed by the Department of Forensic Sciences in Costa Rica in collaboration with Adele Quigley-McBride, a CSAFE researcher and an assistant professor in psychology at Simon Fraser University.
By implementing strategies such as Linear Sequential Unmasking-Expanded (LSU-E) and Blind Verifications, the pilot program aimed to enhance the reliability of forensic evaluations and reduce decision-making subjectivity.
The pilot program demonstrates that changes can be adopted to mitigate cognitive bias even when resources are limited. It provides a concrete example of how laboratories can translate recommendations from research findings into everyday forensic practice to strengthen the reliability and integrity of forensic conclusions.
The webinar will feature insights from the project’s key contributors, including Quigley-McBride, Carolina Rojas Alfaro and Mauricio Chacón Hernández. They will share valuable insights regarding the implementation of these strategies and how they navigated various challenges, offering attendees a model for improving forensic reliability.
Results from the pilot program have also been published in a recent article in Forensic Science International: Synergy.
This webinar is free and open to the public, but researchers and members of the forensic science and legal communities are encouraged to attend.
Forensic practitioners from Central and South America may find the webinar particularly relevant since the pilot program was conducted in Costa Rica. The webinar will be in English, but the presenters can assist with any language barriers if some information is unclear.
Attendees will have the chance to interact with the presenters and ask questions during the live presentation. But for those unable to attend, a recording will be available on CSAFE Learning for later viewing.
