CSAFE 2021 Field Update

The Center for Statistics and Applications in Forensic Evidence (CSAFE) invites you to the 2021 Field Update to learn more about our activities and accomplishments from the past year. Our team of researchers will highlight the Center’s current research projects, and give you information and tools you can use. The Field Update will provide you a chance to give feedback, suggestions or ask questions.

Field Update Highlights

  • Our faculty and staff will discuss the latest advancements in CSAFE research
  • Hear from the authors themselves as they present insights from our top publications from the past year
  • Preview some of the research our teams are beginning to work on for the next year
  • We will analyze the most popular types of algorithms and their applications in forensic disciplines

Who is Invited

The CSAFE Field Update is free and open to the public, but researchers, collaborators and members of the broader forensics and statistics communities are encouraged to attend. The meeting will be held virtually, and registration is required. The registration form is below. If you have any questions, please contact Kristen Hanson, CSAFE Administrative Specialist, at khanson3@iastate.edu.

Yong Guan, Iowa State University

12:40 p.m. — Break

1 p.m. — Session 2: What’s Next at CSAFE

Our researchers will share the new projects they are currently working on. Each breakout session will last 25 minutes, with 5 minutes between each session to allow you to move to different breakout rooms.

Breakout Room A

1 p.m.: Evaluating Foundational Validity of Toolmark Analysis
Maria Cuellar, University of Pennsylvania

1:30 p.m.: Subclass Characterization and Analysis of Firearms
Keith Morris, West Virginia University

Breakout Room B

1 p.m.: Statistical Methods for Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
Hal Stern, University of California, Irvine

1:30 p.m.: Statistical Models for the Generation and Interpretation of Footwear Impression Evidence
Charless Fowlkes, University of California, Irvine

2 p.m. — Session 3: Applying Algorithms to Forensic Science Analysis

In this two-part session, learn how algorithms are becoming a helpful tool and critical considerations for their implementation. Separate panels will deliver each section and be available for discussion immediately following their respective presentations.

Part 1: Discover algorithmic approaches currently being implemented in forensic science labs and disciplines.

Part 2: Consider the ethical implications of algorithms and when they should or should not be explored as an option.
